About the role

The R&D Packaging Technologist is responsible for undertaking the packaging research and development of new and existing products and processes- with a specific focus on Value Engineering to enable the company to meet its commercial- marketing and production objectives.

Initiate and lead packaging related projects for the purpose of Value Engineering- Quality or Process Improvement.

  • Assist the business in identifying and supporting Value Engineering opportunities by working with internal stakeholders and suppliers.
  • Deliver projects right first time on time with effective project management.
  • Sound design results at the lowest total cost (materials- operations and logistics) while achieving the project brief.
  • Packaging design which meets the company’s obligations to the Australian Packaging Covenant and the New Zealand Packaging Stewardship scheme where practical
  • Specification and associated documentation development and control.

Support Head of R&D as key link to packaging suppliers and to keep abreast of developments in industry and marketplace.

  • Ensure Heinz in at forefront on innovative packaging solutions- maximising profit from new and improved packaging.
  • Ensure suppliers provide Heinz with best outcomes in terms of packaging performance- cost and innovation.

About you

  • Tertiary qualification in Food Science- Food Technology- R&D or similar
  • Previous packaging/R&D experience within a FMCG company is highly desirable
  • Strong cross functional team member with a partnership approach
  • Proactive with excellent problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong project management skills and ability to manage tight timelines.
  • Strong presentation and communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Strong technical understanding of packaging materials including canning- bottle glass and pouch materials.
  • Deep knowledge of the role packaging plays in food safety- shelf life- food interaction- transit and customer and consumer requirements.
