Description & Requirements

About the role:

In this role you will be the R&D Technical Lead in the Petfood Cluster area managing NPD Innovation projects- Ingredient Supply continuity and Value Engineering project execution.

NPD

  • Execute R&D NPD Innovation projects that are identified by the commercial cluster across Retail- Export- Private Label and Export Business.
  • Support in the development in petfood artwork and substantiating claims
  • Support & guide technologist in other petfood projects
  • Collaborate with Massey University in development / advising on nutritional claims in petfood projects. Along with working on palatability testing on new formulations and AAFCO testing.  
  • Stay abreast of all relevant animal nutrition guidelines e.g. AAFCO (American Association of Feed Control Officials) Cat and dog Nutrition profiles or FEDIAF and ensure products comply with the relevant legal standards
  • Work with relevant contracted third parties to ensure a well-established Petfood research program (e.g. the Massey University Feline and Canine Units)
  • Advise marketing- legal- quality and operations of any nutritional policy changes to ensure the business remains compliant with all relevant animal nutrition regulations and standards

Technical

  • Support site in technical investigations from quality- processing or formulation related issues.  
  • Share technical knowledge with wider team.
  • Support in upskilling Petfood Pilot Plant

Value Engineering

Execute R&D Value Engineering in identified Value Engineering opportunities across Formula- Process- Package and/or Distribution.

Supply Continuity

  • Maintaining supply continuity of our core products- as a result of ingredient short falls and/or substitutions.
  • Responsible for managing- negotiating and allocating resources to ensure delivery of

     Supply continuity of core products (due to ingredient shortfalls)

About you:

  • Tertiary qualification in Engineering (Process- Chemical or Mechanical) Food Technology/Science.
  • Petfood Manufacturing/ Nutrition Experience
  • Minimum of 6 years’ experience in a Research and Development in the Food industry. 
  • Familiarity with and ability to work within manufacturing and Pilot Plant environment.
  • Computer skills including Excel- Word- Project Management tools- PowerPoint and key board skills.
  • Understanding of the FSANZ Food Standards code and NZPFMA Pet Food Labelling Guidelines. and food labelling requirements.  
  • Understanding of interactions between ingredients- additives- recipes- processes and packaging types.
